Smoking Addiction
By Eric Hartwell
More and more people these days are found to be completely hooked
in the habit of smoking. More and more films are found to be
portraying smoking to be something that is done only by the rich,
the gutsy and the famous. But it does not really make a realistic
portrayal of the ill effects of smoking and the smoking addiction it
perpetuates in the typical chain smoker.
Smoking addiction starts out innocently, which can probably emanate
from a harmless bout of curiosity. A person who gets hooked into the
habit finds himself slowly but surely craving for the cigarette on a
regular basis. At first, there is tolerable ability to resist taking
a smoke. The onset of smoking addiction only begins when the person
starts to have some emotional attachments to the habit of smoking.
Smoking addiction does not pick people on basis of gender, age,
social status or nationality. For as long as a person if capable of
sustaining the habit, the smoking addiction can thrive well in all
levels and all conceivable circumstances. Actually, the whole
smoking addiction can be stopped but much willpower will be needed
because the smoking habit, as far as the addicted smoker is
concerned, has gone beyond what is just a leisurely thing and became
a need for one to feel satisfied, fulfilled or happy.
The primary ingredient in a cigarette, which causes smoking
addiction, is the nicotine. It has a lot of psychological effects,
usually uplifting the mood and making one more active than usual.
Nicotine often gets embedded in the body through the circulatory
system and the lungs, and while physically harmful, elicits the
addiction by means of conditioning a smoker’s body to depend on it
over time. The stimulating effects of nicotine can also keep one
calm under moments of extreme stress. At first, the body will reject
nicotine. But like other introduced elements to the body on a daily
basis, the body eventually becomes numb to the ill effects and will
be able to take higher and higher doses of nicotine from smoking
until it reaches a point that smoking addiction occurs.
The smoking addiction is not just perpetuated physically. It may
also be possible that there are other attachments to the activity of
smoking which makes it so appealing. A person may find that he is at
his best charming self when he smokes, or that he or she is more
productive with his job or more able to chill out with friends with
a trusty cigarette at bay. In a way, it is like a security blanket
which makes people feel good about themselves.
The smoking addiction triggers a lot of other adverse things in the
body if left untreated. It is not just an emotional thing. It is
also something with physical repercussions to it in the long term. A
lot of people have been known to invest much in support groups and
other expensive modes of psychotherapy just to be able to kick the
smoking habit. Some people who cannot afford to have the willpower
or expense of kicking the smoking habit just succumb to the myriad
of illnesses and problems that the smoking addiction brings.
